Field Kiln Cafe in Chengdu is run together by husband and wife Chen Shifu and Gongqiu. From a batch of bread to a table of food, from the garden's plants to a greeting at the table, each brings their own strengths to the daily work they share.
More than food
Walking into a restaurant is about more than choosing something to eat. Where the afternoon light falls, how comfortable the chair feels, whether the things within reach are pleasant to use, and how you are welcomed at the door: these small details become part of the meal.
That is why Field Kiln Cafe has never been only a bakery, a pizza place or a restaurant defined by one kind of food. Bread, pizza and other dishes all come from the same kiln. The space, the service and the way people connect bring them together around a welcoming table.
He spends much of his time with the kiln, the dough and the food, working out how the fire burns and how each dish turns out. His attention to technique can seem single-minded, but the consistency at the table comes from his willingness to try again, however much work it takes.
She and her husband Chen Shifu run Field Kiln Cafe together. Her care is felt in the space, the garden, the interior finishes and furnishings, and the small objects that seem casually placed. Her welcome in the dining room and everyday conversations with regulars give the restaurant the ease of meeting old friends.
Some come back for another batch of bread. Others simply want to return to a familiar table and stay a little longer.
